An experiment in single-word speed reading.

An experiment in single-word speed reading.

Inspired by the hubbub going around about a soon-to-be-released app that will allow us all to read Ulysses in a single sitting, I decided to experiment with the technique myself.

This is a simple bookmarklet that converts paragraphs of text to a rapid-fire single-word display. It works well in conjunction with the wonderful "Readability" bookmarklet, and actually does ok on its own with some article-based websites (wikipedia, for instance).

Step 1

Drag the following two links (bookmarklets) to your browser's bookmark bar.

Readability - Read Now

Speed Read It!

Step 2

Navigate to an article that you'd like to try speed reading. The New York Times might be a good place to start.

Once you're viewing an article, click the Readability - Read Now bookmarklet. After the nicely formatted article loads via Readability, click the Speed Read It! bookmarklet.

Step 3

Enjoy!

Note: This is for large screens at the moment. If you know how to add a bookmarklet on your mobile device, go ahead and give it a try... no promises.
